One of the requests that apparently reoccurred during my opening reception is for an artist talk about this exhibition and artist project. The artist talk is now scheduled to coincide with the exhibition closing reception at 4pm on Saturday, June 2nd (2018) at the Fabrik Projects gallery.

To talk about myself and my art projects is not always the easiest thing for me to do. To write about it as I have on this blog is okay, perhaps something I am more comfortable with in that I have an opportunity to develop what I write and the edit before I commit to publishing it. Even then when I have some second thoughts, I can come back and edit what I wrote. I am also very comfortable teaching a workshop about a subject that I am very familiar with, such as my book development class with LACP. Talking about myself and my art projects, perhaps not so much.

What does help if I start taking some notes to outline what I want to convey, then leaving plenty of time for questions and answers. I am going to try to cover the basics about this artist project: what, where, when, how and maybe the most critical; why. I also suspect that this will be a walking talk, not a formal group sit-down, which will help me a little bit more in that it’s a bit easier for me if I can walk and talk about the exhibition.

The photograph above is the exhibition space that I had envisioned for this project in how the photographs (barriers) would ring around a room and thus surround the viewer. One of the many exhibition trade-offs; larger prints but then less images in this space. It will be interesting to get some more feedback during my talk as I already plan to defer to some open ended questions for the group.

Location: Fabrik Projects; 2636 S. La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles (near Culver City)

Artist talk & reception: Saturday, June 2nd,  4 -7pm

Cheers & hope to see you there!

Third Annual Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP) Members’ Exhibition at the dnj Gallery in Bergamot Art Station

The exhibition will run from July 30 – August 27, 2016, with the opening night reception  held on Saturday, July 30, 6-8 pm 2016. The Los Angeles Center of Photography showcases our supporting Members’ work with an annual exhibition. The exhibition, normally programmed in July of each year, is open to Members’ only with the the opening reception at the dnj Gallery in Bergamot Station.

The juror for this exhibition is January Parkos Arnall, who is an interdisciplinary scholar and curator expert in photographic practice, theory and history, and grounded in modern and contemporary art movements in the United States. January is currently utilizing her comprehensive education in cultural studies and visual theory in her position within the curatorial department of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles focusing on Public Engagement.

In discussing his photograph, Clausing states “This is one of a series of self-images that present anatomically ambiguous formations. Symmetry has always been a measure of beauty, yet here mirroring transforms normal body parts, such as a hand or a foot, into unexpected “scapes” and shapes, transporting the viewer to a world of fantasy. While evoking unexpected associations, these images are in the tradition of mutated body art and evoke both attraction and repulsion, as they challenge our notions concerning human appearance.”

dnj Gallery is located at Bergamot Station, 2525 Michigan Avenue, Suite J1, Santa Monica, CA 90404 & the admission and adjacent parking is free.

OC High School Photo Invitational

Posted in Juried opportunities, Photo Galleries, Photographers, Photography, tPE members, Uncategorized by douglaspstockdale on May 20, 2016

The 24th annual Orange County High School Photography Invitational is in process, with today (May 20th) being the last day for submissions.

The accepted photographs will be exhibited at Orange Coast College (OCC) photography gallery on Wednesday, June 1st, 2016, from 5:30 – 8:30pm. The awards ceremony will occur at 6:30 pm.

The jurors for this year, who are members of the Photographers Exchange, are Larry Vogel, John Montich, Barbara Runge, Ellen Butler, and Larry Pribble.

This High School Photographic Invitation opportunity was started by Ellen Butler when she was the photo instructor at Costa Mesa High School.

Larry Pribble states “There are several hundred entries every year.  We are amazed every year at the level of creativity, artistry, and craftsmanship that we see, and at the reception we have the delightful experience of being able to meet and talk with the student artists whose work we also have the pleasure of recognizing with cash awards and donated prizes from local photo related businesses.”

As a way to help to encourage and honor the creative artistry of the students who enter, the Photographic Exchange has supported the exhibit by presenting a cash award or awards to deserving students for the quality of their work.  Members of the Photographers Exchange have also supported the students by attending the reception.  If you are able to make it to OCC on June 1st, you won’t be disappointed!

Photobook Independent review

This last week was Photo Independent which was held at the Raleigh film studios in Hollywood on sound stage #14. Within this larger event was Photobook Independent exhibiton, which was a group of exhibitors who were focused on the publication and presentation of their photobooks.

Photo Exchange member Douglas Stockdale was a guest curator, photobook exhibitor and one of the judges for this year’s photobook competition. Stockdale provided walking curatorial discussions of the winning photobooks and then the photobooks of some of the exhibitors. Stockdale also provided an interesting insight on the photobook judging process and the four key judging aspects: photography, concept/idea, design/layout and the book production and how all of these aspects are intertwined.

The photobooks at the event were very diverse, including the full spectrum from trade edition books to limited edition hand-made artist books. Exhibitors photographed below include Susan Burnstine showing photographs for her new book, Sara Terry and her recent self-published artist books series X, Marissa Roth and her photobook investigating Tibet and Ejen Chuang who is documenting the subculture of Cosplay.

I had an opportunity to join Hiroshi Watanabe at the Gala opening of photo l.a. (Thursday evening). Walking through a gallery (Fair) exhibition like photo l.a. provides an interesting snap-shot of some of the current trends in contemporary photography as well as bench mark for the market of earlier photographer’s work. Note: This is not the time or place for a photographer to try to button hole a gallery owner with a portfolio about one’s “great” photographs, but to take note of who is exhibiting what and to follow up with gallery owners afterward. Which is to say that you should at least introduce yourself!

The overall exhibition & gallery emphasis seemed to lean towards photographers who were or are now exploring conceptual projects. There were a couple of gallery’s who were showing early work by some documentary photographers, but usually limited to a few prints in their collection that were available for sale. As a disclaimer, the aisles were crowded, we were an hour late, so we moved through the exhibition hall at a decent pace. Nevertheless, there was still a lot of interesting and diverse collections of photographs to look at and study.

Cheers!
