I’ve been a subscriber to SHOTS Magazine for several years now. I was introduced to the magazine by Doug Beasley who is an extraordinary professional photographer based in St. Paul, Minnesota. http://vqphoto.com/bio/douglasbeasley/
When thinking about how to describe the photography presented in SHOTS, the first thought that comes to mind is “alternative”. But this is not the “alternative” that generally comes to mind when used with the word photography since that connotation is related to the technical processes of creating photographs. When I use alternative in context with the photographs shown in SHOTS, I am refering to the subjects of and the ideas expressed in the photos.
From the SHOTS website –
“SHOTS Magazine is an independent, reader-supported, quarterly journal of fine art photography in its 23rd year of publication. SHOTS is known for its democratic presentation of work by a variety of photographers from around the world. Often described as a “photographer’s photography magazine”, SHOTS reaches a wide audience that includes not only photographers, but also educators, gallery directors, museums and others interested in photography.”
