Call for Art – Galeria Studio Cerrillo

Posted in Juried opportunities by douglaspstockdale on January 15, 2009

Commencing in 2009 Studio Cerrrillo (San Cristóbal, Chiapas, Mexico) plans to offer a year of performance, conceptual and installation art.

We are seeking an original concept created for our gallery which is  4.6 /4.6 /3.2 meters, 15 liner meters of exhibition space, a small back patio, and the street which is easily closed for the day and night of the inauguration, thus allowing the connected spaces to serve as an excellent venue for the artist.

Theme: That which goes up, generally must come down

Projects submitted for this year of alternative art need to be performance, installation or conceptual to be considered. We are specifically seeking original works that are designed for specifically for our space. We want ideas that pushes the edge of each individual artist and the audience.    Whether   MODERN,  SEXUAL,  SATIRICAL, REACTIONARY,  POLITICAL or PROHIBITED,  we want each artist to explore the outer edge, to create a new work and to have fun.

Beyond production of the exhibit we are asking each artist to do a brief, hour or so, class on whatever subject is selected by the artist, the day before or after the opening. The audience will be students, admirers and the general public. We support this idea as it brings increased attention to each exhibit and helps to expands the visual vocabulary of the local population.

Friday at photo l.a.

Posted in Photo Art Business, Photo Galleries, Photograph Exhibits, Photographers, Photography, tPE members by douglaspstockdale on January 10, 2009

The members of the Photo Exchange were will represented at photo l.a. yesterday (Friday, Jan 9th), but we found that although it cost only $20 to attend, it costs an additional $10 to park. oh, well.

I had an opportunity to walk part of the exhibition with Rudy Vega, Larry Weiss, Diane Reeves, Ellen Butler, Jim McKinniss, Ann Marie Rosseau and Larry Pribble.

There is a lot to see, with an extremely wide selection of photographs and photographic books to look at and consider. Overall a great opportunity to be insprired in the potential of this wonderful medium.

Diane Reeves:  Highway robbery to charge $10 for parking but the show was worth the $20 admission.  There will always be the “What were they thinking?” but overall I didn’t see any artist command the show as I have in other years.  Sometimes it looks like everyone carries the same thing.  A little less of that this year.  The most exciting work seemed to be coming out of Santa Fe galleries.  Everything I was attracted to was from elsewhere……

Stockdale – POD publishing workshop

Posted in Books & Magazines, Photo Art Business, Photographers, Photography, tPE members by douglaspstockdale on January 2, 2009

The 23 Sandy Gallery, located in Portland, Oregon, has just announced the availability of my March 15th, 2009 workshop, Developing a Photography Print on Demand (POD) Book.

In this one-day workshop, I will cover the topics of: Establishing the purpose of your book, what is Print on Demand (POD) vs traditional publishing, the POD publishing options, understanding the parts of a book, book design and dummy, editing, pairing and sequencing photographs, POD templates, color management for POD publishing, sharpening images for POD printing, book proof & production and finally, marketing your book.

Yes, there is a ton of material to cover, but it should be a great time. This workshop is occurring in conjunction with the 23 Sandy Gallery’s juried Photo+Book exhibit, so there will be a lot of creative books to look at for inspiration. I will also be bringing some of the POD books that I have recently reviewed on The Photo Book, as well as some other examples of traditional books that include the good, the bad and exceptional.

So if you have been thinking about developing a photographic POD book or would like to take your POD books to a new level, please plan on joining me at the 23 Sandy Gallery in Portland, OR on March 15th, and you can obtain more information or sign-up here.
